Like a green-eyed human, my red/tan Miata is relatively uncommon amongst its peers. As it stands, her beautiful golden locks are shrouded by a hardtop. I've been curious what things would look like if I ditched the hardtop and put some matte black wheels on. Enter the art of the 15 second photoshop visualization.
Now, if I were to pull off this rather drastic alteration to my car's appearance, I'd have to replace the top (because mine is beyond shit). Keep it simple—vinyl with a plastic window. For wheels, I'd go with 15x8 black 6ULs wrapped in some good 205/50R15 rubber. Throw a Flyin' Miata suspension package in there to improve looks and handling, and do the swap to larger NA8 brake rotors (been planning this anyway).
I'm really torn about the hardtop. To lose it would mean shaving ~60 lbs off the very top of the car, as well as making spontaneous roofless motoring much more accessible. On the other hand, the hardtop is excellent for security, weatherproofing, and cabin insulation—plus it looks bitchin'.
I should go to bed now.

Don't get matte black wheels, it looks bad.

I say put a new 'blonde' soft top on it, but skip the matte black wheels... I know it's a popular Miata/MX-5 wheel option, but I think it'd look sweet with some gold or silver 15" rpf1's! :)
Plus, those wheels are practically indestructible.

If you ditch the hardtop, which I'd opt to keep cause I love the look of Miata's with a hardtop, you should definitely add a roll bar. 2nd to the look of the hardtop is a Miata with a cool roll bar.

Ditch the hardtop. Never had one on my 03. I prefer to have the top down as much as i can. Especially here in Michigan.
Also pic of my Miata just cause

Yep. I have many reasons for wanting a roll bar.

Soft tops are good when they're good and bad when they're bad. I street park my car so I'm kind of apprehensive.

First, I think they look fine. Second, no matter what color my wheels are, they will eventually be black because of my brake pads. I have silver alloys right now and keeping them clean is hopeless.
